Textbook, Third Edition


The third edition of South Dakota: A Journey Through Time was published in 2021. It has a new chapter titled "South Dakota in a Global World." The 3rd edition is available in a sturdy hardcover binding. Its author is Dr. John E. Miller - professor emeritus of history at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD and noted regional author. He was the author of six books, including Becoming Laura Ingalls Wilder: The Woman Behind the Legend and Looking for History on Highway 14.

Student Workbook and Answer Key, Third Edition


The student workbook reviews  important vocabulary and key points for each chapter in the textbook. It includes two pages of interesting activities per chapter and features original illustrations drawn by the author's nephews. The workbook and the answer key were designed by Susan Turnipseed, a retired 4th grade teacher.

Teacher's Resource Guide, Second Edition


The companion Teacher's Resource Guide is comprised of vocabulary lists, discussion questions, and a variety of activities for each chapter. The activities include many resources that are available online for both teachers and students to use in learning more about the history, geography, and culture of the state. Additional resources to introduce and conclude a study of South Dakota, such as maps, poetry, and music, are included. The guide is co-authored by Susan Turnipseed and Geneva Ackman.

Audio Textbook, Third Edition


The third edition of South Dakota: A Journey Through Time Audio Textbook is available on USB flash drives. It contains a word-for-word reading of the third edition of the textbook South Dakota: A Journey Through Time, written by John E. Miller, and is narrated by Bertram Getzug, Grant Peterson, and Paul E. Hillner.  It was produced by Brian Eclov, Jay Vanduch and Paul E. Hillner.

Teacher Tips, Second Edition


Additional resource material for teachers has been selected from the publication entitled Tutor Tips. It will be most useful for new teachers and their assistants in developing extra enrichment projects to accompany the textbook and other materials. It includes sample lesson plans and suggestions for adapting the material for students with special needs. Edited by Sarah Hillner, the selections have been written by experienced teachers, tutors, trainers, and adult students who desire to share their love of history with developing readers.

Gentle People: A Case Study of Rockport Colony Hutterites


Gentle People is an astute and first-hand analysisss that invites our reassessment and enriches our understanding of the often misunderstood Hutterites as this iconic and emblematic place among them, Rockport Colony, SD. The author, Joanita Kant, is an honors graduate of the University of South Dakota and earned an M.S. in geography from South Dakota State University. She has been an author, museum director, historical preservationist, graduate teaching assistant, AmeriCorps VISTA, and Humanities speaker in South Dakota. Currently Joanita resides in Brookings where she serves as adjunct faculty and studies for a Ph.D. while serving as a graduate research assistant at SDSU.

First We Imagine: 22 Creative South Dakotans Speak on the Subject of Creativity


These interviews conducted by John E. Miller encompass some of South Dakota’s most creative artists, photographers, writers, educators, businessmen, politicians, journalists, physicians, and research scientists. Bernie Hunhoff, Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, Kathleen Norris, Greg Latza, Linda Hasselstrom, Patrick Hicks, Lawrence Diggs, Kent Myers, and fourteen other creative South Dakotans discuss the nature and methods of, the conditions conducive to, the problems associated with, the joys of, and the wonderful results of creativity in all of its manifold expressions. This book will not only inform and instruct you; it will also inspire you to greater creativity in your own life.
