Chapter 10: Populism and Progressivism

Vocabulary:

  1. Populism - an independent political party

  2. Progressivism - a political reform movement

  3. drought - a period of little or no rain

  4. initiative - the right or procedure by which citizens can propose a new law by petition and have it voted on by other citizens

  5. referendum - the practice of placing a measure directly before the voters rather than deciding it through a legislative body

  6. petition - a written document making a request

  7. commission - a group of people who are given power to carry out a job or duty

  8. compensation - payment for work or injury

  9. prohibition - the forbidding by law of the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages

  10. suffrage - the right to vote
