John E. Miller


John E. Miller taught American and South Dakota history at South Dakota State University for three decades. He was the author of eight books, including Looking for History on Highway 14, Becoming Laura Ingalls Wilder: The Woman behind the Legend, and Small-Town Dreams: Stories of Midwestern Boys Who Shaped America. He was the second annual recipient of the Frederick Jackson Turner Lifetime Achievement Award in Midwestern History and also received the Doane Robinson Award from the South Dakota State Historical Society for Lifetime Contribution to South Dakota History. Dr. Miller passed away in 2020.

Susan Turnipseed


Susan Turnipseed, co-author of the Teacher's Resource Guide and author of the Student Workbook, was a 4th grade teacher for 36 years in the Brookings, SD School District. From 2009-2015, Susan taught technology classes to the district's 4th grade students. In 2011 she was named the South Dakota Teacher of the Year. In retirement she has worked with student teachers from South Dakota State University and mentored new teachers in the Brookings School District.

Geneva Ackman


Geneva Ackman, co-author of the Teacher’s Resource Guide, graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1953 and completed a Master’s degree in reading at Clarke College in 1970. She taught elementary school in Iowa and Virginia and served as a reading specialist in Dubuque and in Brookings, South Dakota. She had twenty years of experience as an educator of English as a Second Language and also served as a part-time instructor at South Dakota State University. She served terms as chair of the East Central Literacy Council and as secretary of the South Dakota Literacy Council. Geneva passed away in 2014.

Sarah Hillner


Sarah Hillner, editor of Tutor Tips, earned a B.A. in Psychology at Indiana University and has completed five years of graduate study in experimental psychology. She was an academic advisor in the Pyschology Department at South Dakota State University for several years. Sally was appointed as the chair of the Governor's South Dakota Statewide Literacy Task Force in 1986-87, and served as the president of the South Dakota Literacy Council from 1997-98. She is certified as a master tutor trainer and supervising tutor trainer from Laubach Literacy Action in Syracuse, NY, and trains volunteer tutors in the areas of basic literacy and English as a Second Langage. Her other endeavors have included leadership positions in the East Central LIteracy Council, SDSU Club, US-Friends at SDSU, Friendship Circle, and the General Federation of Women's Clubs.
